You deserve a Mercedes Benz was the commercial’s key statement on the sports radio station this morning. The chatter heard on the road of foolishness is so ridiculous…and destructive. Anytime we hear talk that we deserve something good, the father of lies is attempting to lure us into a cage trap whose steel bars are discontentment, greed, lust, narcissism, and other forms of death.
Here’s the truth: you deserve to be burning in hell right now.
Yet you aren’t! More than likely you could go get in your non-Mercedes car and it would start and take you where you want to go. Tonight, instead of burning in hell, you are going to sit on a couch and watch TV in one room. And when you are hungry you are going to get up and walk into a different room and pick from a broad selection of food options. And when you are tired you are going to get up and walk into yet another room and climb into a comfortable bed and have a safe, warm night’s sleep. You have every single reason to be going through your life at the standard of living you currently have, in wide-eyed wonder and awe that you have it so good. Because what you deserve is to be burning in hell right now.
And even greater than the vast material difference between what you deserve and what you have, is your position in life. As a Christian, you know the Living God personally. And you don’t just know Him, you get to wake up every day and join God in ruling and redeeming creation. You are a servant of the Lord. You are a friend of God. You deserve to be in hell right now, but you get to spend the rest of your life personally knowing the Living God and serving Him. You have every single reason to be going through your life in the position you have in Christ, in wide-eyed wonder and awe that you have it so good.
And all of this is thanks to our Lord Jesus being born of a virgin, living a perfect life, paying the penalty for our sinfulness on our behalf on that wretched cross, and rising again on the third day.
So, you have every reason to celebrate Christmas this year. If you can afford that Mercedes Benz for Christmas, praise God! If you can’t, it doesn’t matter. You have it so good, a Benz cannot possibly make your life better; at best, a Benz can be the 1,000,001 amazing thing besides the 1,000,000 amazing things you already have.
But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. 1 Timothy 6:6-10
Merry Christmas! Jesus is Lord!
