Are you in that spiritual state of “yuck” in which you love the Lord, but you are mired in sinfulness, and so you can’t bring yourself to come to Him AGAIN, to confess the same sin and seek renewal? And yet, you also know the longer it takes you to come to Him and be renewed in His holiness and refilled with the Spirit, the stronger your sinful appetites will become. The spiritual state of yuck. Here is a word of encouragement from Joshua 5.
(5:1) While recovering from circumcision, Israel would have been vulnerable to attack as the fighting men would be out of commission, to say the least. So, to give Israel time to be circumcised, God paralyzed their enemies to protect Israel from them. God gave Israel time and space to undergo the ceremony of devotion to Him. What love! You can feel yourself slipping further and further into sin as you remain in the state of yuck. But, you can’t bring yourself to be renewed in the Lord because of your shame and because sin has dulled your appetite to be in intimacy with the Lord. Can I just tell you that your Heavenly Father loves you so much. He is giving you time and space, through His mercy, to undergo renewal in Him.
(5:2-7) Undergo a time of renewal with the Lord. Get alone with Him, away from people and technology. Confess your sinfulness. Ask the Lord to do in you what you cannot do for yourself – forgive you, drain you of your sinfulness, fill you with His holiness. Ask Him to retune your appetites to Him. Ask Him to give you the wisdom of God, the mind of Christ, and the filling of the Spirit.
(5:8) Jesus Christ is your place of rest. He is Lord of the Sabbath. Stay in that place in your heart: talking to Him, confessing, apologizing, expressing, believing. Stay there until He renews you in Him and refills you with the Spirit.
(5:9) Then believe His promise: “Today I have rolled away the shame of your return to slavery to sin.” You are free again in Christ!
(5:10-12) Passover was a celebration commemorating the day God delivered them from bondage to Pharaoh and Egypt by the blood of the lamb that covered their doorposts. Celebrate your deliverance from bondage to Satan and sin by the blood of the Lamb of God that covers your life. Celebrate! Give thanks to the Lord Jesus for His death, burial, and resurrection, by which Satan and sinfulness were defeated!
(5:13-15) Have the conversation with Christ that Joshua had with Him in vs. 14. Re-pledge your allegiance to our Lord Jesus as your King. “I am at your command,” Joshua said. “What do you want your servant to do?”
Now get up, renewed servant of the Lord, and serve the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength!
