Along with the rest of Houston, NEHBC was definitely impacted by the big rainstorm this past weekend. We lost usage of our new, big parking lot due to flooding. Here’s what happened: The drainage system under the parking lot is installed but it is not hooked up to the county drainage system yet. The rain hitting the parking lot drained into the underground pipes, which flow into the new drainage ditch on the south side of our parking lot. However, because the drainage system is not hooked up to the county yet, thousands of gallons of rain had nowhere to go. Once the ditch filled up, the water started backing up onto the parking lot creating several inches of standing water.
The really unfortunate news is that the drainage system in the ditch is scheduled to be hooked up to the county system in the next week. Had the rainstorm come one week later, it would not have been an issue.
The solution is a large pump sucking the water out of the big ditch onto our existing parking lot, which is sending the water underground through the drainage system and into the county’s system. It will take one to two full days of pumping water to clear the entire parking lot and then it will be back to normal.
